X-men Origins: Wolverine was leak without the complete special effects, it was downloaded like crazy on the internet, I got the opportunity watch it and it was quite cool, I was considering to go to the cinema, but then the swine flu got movie places close for a while and I lost interest. No matter my case, in USA it manage to make $85 million dollars in the first week end after the buzz generated by the leak and people that want to check the complete movie.
Well that decision maybe it wasn’t delivered, but Microsoft has made 2 releases of Windows 7, getting people to try it and actually loving it, it’s hard to get a bad review. Actually if you haven’t use it try it, it solve a lot of problems from Vista and it is way faster. The idea of Microsoft was we are so confident that this software is good, that people checking it before buying it was actually a good idea.
In Mexico, Natalia Lafourcade just release her new album on her MySpace and the single Azul was been there for a long time, I will probably going to go to get one copy this weekend or to a concert or something, anyhow I could rip it from MySpace today, but I want to give money to the artist.
Mean while, RIAA and other copyright associations are trying to stop internet sharing because “it’s bad for business”, taking in consideration that the first trimester of 2009 they didn’t gave any platinum record, yes sales are bad, but internet sharing is not the problem, bad music is the problem.
In conclusion leaking music, movies and content, it generate a viral buzz, if you have something good to offer to the public you will get money for your work with a simple donate button in your website like NIN did. In conclusion leaking thing is a good business while you have the opportunity to generate money from the buzz and generate fans. In today world making buzz and capitalizing it it’s the new game and old selling structures should disappear. Please don’t stop the progress, RIAA.

Leaking as a social media strategy is important. Giving special content in the internet(like mythbusters) only matters if its good content, if you are willing to go “all in” and actually put your product on the table, you better have something very good that really make people say “hey, this is good, they should get some of my money for this” or else you will have a big problem!
I am trying to figure out how many business models structures can exist, I follow http://business-model-design.blogspot.com/ that is creating a book, that from my knowledge is the first book in this subject, and thinking leaking as a business model looks related to an open source alternative, where the creators release its work to the general public, and ask for donations to support the owner and keep him/her working in new research, in the case of leaking is like a promotion where the money comes from buying the work in a different presentation or assist to a concert to get an extra experience from the event itself, therefore it is not same thing than open source, but could be classified in the same group? I guess it is a good subject for discussion.
